Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect the liver. Left untreated, it can cause serious and life-threatening damage to the liver over many years.
A silent Killer
Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver caused by the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The infection can cause chronic, often fatal conditions. Globally, an estimated 58 million people have chronic HCV infection, with about 1.5 million new infections and 300,000 deaths occurring per year. The burden is thought to be highest in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.
Anti-viral medicines can cure more than 95% of people with hepatitis C, but access to diagnosis and treatment is low.
